Motherhood: The Place of Simple Joys

I am a lover of all things books. A friend recently narrated a scenario where thugs broke into their house at night while it was raining and made away with a few household items. They didn’t touch the books and they had placed a sum of money there intended to pay tithe. Interesting? I love reading. This is to me a simple joy that makes the journey of motherhood fun and fulfilling. Reading takes you to new worlds; you meet new people and stretch your imagination. After reading the book The Lady, Her Lover and Her Lord by Bishop TD Jakes, a balm was smoothed over my heart. Some of my wounds healed. I released myself wholly to God – it was unbelievable that things that had overstayed were swept in a flash. See these words:

Who can restore what life has taken out of you, but God? Who can remind you of what God has promised you, but you? You are your own preacher and occasionally you must say the kind of speech to yourself that enables you to be productive and accomplished. (The Lady, Her Lover and Her Lord, pg 11)

Words are powerful whether written or spoken and I believe every mother needs the constant reassurance of her role and her potential which when released to God’s hand blossoms ever so beautifully. Last year I read the books by Francine Rivers, Her Mother's Hope and Her Daughters Dream. How the web of shame and guilt entangled the relationships of moms and their daughters (of course this affected the sons and husbands involved). Many bad things happened. But good things happened in the midst of it all. Dreams were fulfilled. Hopes were born. God was at the center with a magnificent plan, A GOOD PLAN. To give a FUTURE and a HOPE - an expected end.

Look for those simple joys that will make your journey in motherhood fun and take away some of the heaviness when you have had all you could take.

As I end, I would love to dedicate this song by William Cowper to all moms and wish you a HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! YOU ARE WORTHY OF THE CALLING IN MOTHERHOOD.

God moves in a mysterious way

His wonders to perform;

He plants His footsteps in the sea

And rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines

Of never failing skill

He treasures up His bright designs

And works His sov’reign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;

The clouds ye so much dread

Are big with mercy and shall break

In blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,

But trust Him for His grace;

Behind a frowning providence

He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,

Unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,

But sweet will be the flow’r.

Blind unbelief is sure to err

And scan His work in vain;

God is His own interpreter,

And He will make it plain.
