In the last email, we said that our experiences shape who we become, and that is certainly true. But also, the people we meet help to mold who we are. For Mourine, this rings true more than most.

Mourine is the youngest in a large family and lived with her mother and grandmother on a farm. Her mother died when she was still in the nursery and her father went away to Nairobi to find a job. There was very little food in the house, and she and her siblings often went to bed hungry.

One day, an aunt of Mourine’s came to her house and took her and two siblings, saying that she would educate them and provide them with a better life. Unfortunately, the aunt did not do as she promised. Instead, she turned Mourine and her siblings into house help. Even when her father sent money for them to go to school, the aunt kept the money and never let them attend. She didn’t even let the children go to church or socialize with others.

Later, another relative came to take the three children to a better place. That better place was being dropped off at Cana Children’s Home. Her life changed drastically when Mary Mambo, who she refers to as her “true mom”, helped her to learn, to know more about God, and to engage in life. Mary also taught her that she has a Parent who is always with her and will never abandon her.

Mourine now wants to become a lawyer because she knows what it feels like to be mistreated, and she wants to fight for justice, believing that even kids should have someone to turn to when their rights are violated. At Daystar University, Mourine can be who she is, do what God wants her to do, and fulfill her purpose, all the while knowing that the entirety of Daystar and its donors are beside her, cheering her on year after year.
