Starting in 2020, the Schefers gave generous gifts totaling $500,000 to start an internal student loan program. The loan is given at a low-interest rate (which is put back into the fund to help others) and the payback can be either working at Daystar (such as a postgraduate student teaching undergrads) or making payments once they have secured a job. The requirement is that we cannot use the funds until they are matched, so the goal is to reach a million dollars in the fund. So far $113,250 has been given towards the match, so $226,500 is available for student loans!
The loan program was begun with the condition that the original $500,000, will only be available for student loans when matched, with the hope of reaching $1,000,000 for needy students.
