Kathy Johnson is our fearless leader at Daystar U.S. As the Executive Director, she keeps the staff motivated with her positive attitude, kind spirit, and fierce love for God's Kingdom. She is going on her fifth year with Daystar U.S. Below she shares why she loves Daystar, what she does for fun, and the advice she would give to her younger self.
What do you enjoy most about your job at Daystar U.S.?
This is not just a job, it is a ministry, and I feel blessed to be able to use the gifts God has given me to serve this amazing university. I am a people-person and I love working with the students, faculty, staff, and administration at Daystar. I love working with my staff in the office, people who are so committed to God and to doing their best for Daystar. I enjoy connecting with our donors and friends who have caught the vision of Daystar and continue to support it with their finances and prayers.
Though it is hard work to raise money for a university in Africa that most people will never experience in person, it is the most rewarding position I have every had in my career. I feel privileged to be a part of something so meaningful that is making a major impact for God's Kingdom.
How do you see Daystar Changing the African Continent?
The real story of Daystar is what the alumni are doing in the world. When you hear their stories and see how they are servant leaders in their careers, you know Daystar University is accomplishing their mission "to raise up Christian servant leaders" for transformation.
Changing a continent obviously takes time and won't be accomplished overnight. But one by one, our alumni are taking their places in media, education, the church, government, social organizations, and so much more, bringing their high quality education, their servant hearts, and their faith in God to their workplaces and communities. They are changing the continent day by day.
How do you like to spend time outside of the office?
I love to be outdoors (in nice weather :)) and enjoy long walks, bike rides, and just enjoying God's creation. I also enjoy reading (I always have a few books going) and listening to all kinds of music. This helps with the cold weather, which I do not like. And, of course, I love spending time with my husband, kids, and my amazing little grandson, who continues to teach me new lessons all the time.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Spend time with God daily and realize fully that he loves you unconditionally. Nothing we can do or say will make Him love us more or less. Also, laugh more and be able to see the humorous side of life.
