Every great story begins with a dream. A dream to grow, a dream to be more than one thinks is possible, a dream to rise above one’s circumstances. Felicia’s dream was to learn. And this is her story.
Felicia grew up in Kibera, one of Africa’s largest urban slums, with her family. She was very young when a pair of Japanese missionaries recognized her aptitude for learning and encouraged her enrollment in a Christian-based school. Despite her parents struggling to afford the commitment fee of two hundred shillings a month ($1.54 in US dollars today), Felicia attended kindergarten through high school.
As she aged out of that school, Felicia set her sights on Daystar University to continue her education and pursue her dream of music. However, around that time, Covid hit, and her father lost his job as a bus driver. Though her determination to attend Daystar remained strong, being able to afford education became more challenging than ever before.
Felicia took on various jobs, including a community cleanup job, to earn the money she needed. After a while, she managed to save 10,000 shillings ($80 US dollars) to start her studies but still faced financial troubles. Undeterred, she resumed working odd hours while attending Daystar. Despite her efforts, the funds still fell short, prompting her to apply for a scholarship. When she received one, she said that she was grateful for a “second chance to dream”, for without this money, she most likely wouldn’t have been able to afford the rest of college.
Now, with the aforementioned scholarship, she can pursue her dreams of becoming a music therapist- something she wouldn’t have ever been able to become without the scholarship she was given. Also, after her years of school are over, she wants to go back to Kibera and help children like her get the chance to go to school. Making a difference for someone else is what she dreams about.
One of the many lessons we can learn from Felicia’s story is that you should make the most out of anything you do. Whether it is following dreams the Lord has put on your heart or doing a community cleanup job to the best of your ability, do everything as unto God. Serve the Lord with every part of your being and dedicate each and every day to doing His will and He will reward you.
