Joy, a survivor of war in Congo, aims to use her Daystar education to help those in need.
I am the sixth born in a family of 8 children. I am Congolese but lived in Burundi because my parents had fled from Congo due to war. Therefore, I was born and raised as a refugee in Burundi. My dad is a pastor and my mom sells African fabrics but it is not a stable business. In 2015, there was political instability in Burundi which resulted to violence. We fled to Kenya and went to register at the UNHCR to be able to live and study in Kenya. Three of my siblings and I had completed secondary school and needed to start university. In May 2016, I joined Daystar with three of my siblings. Leaving Burundi where my dad had a job and was getting paid, it was a challenge for the four of us to study in Kenya. Financial challenges are what led me to apply for Financial Aid. The Scripture says; “the righteous shall live by faith.” This has been evident in our lives. God has been faithful because our parents did not have funds or even a solid income to be able to start us off in a university. I have come to believe that making requests to God is the most reliable and promising step to take.
Even though I was born in a Christian family, I needed a personal relationship with Jesus. One day I read John 3:16 and interpreted it in a different way that I had ever had before. I realized that all that time I didn’t actually know God but only knew about him from my father’s stories and teaching, but I hadn’t personally experienced Him. I got saved and accepted Christ as a personal Savior. I am currently serving in the Daystar worship team. I have realized there is nothing so rewarding like working for God.
I am studying International Relations and the reason why I took this course is because I like issues dealing with humanitarian engagements. I would like to establish an organization to help the less fortune like refugees, the homeless, the orphans and widows. I also really want to help in the future by sponsoring needy students in Daystar. I believe and know that God will enable me to get there.
Getting this scholarship is a huge miracle to me and my entire family. I am really grateful to have been given such grace. I really thank you and Daystar University for this opportunity. May the Lord bless you, increase you and shine His face upon you. I pray that He fulfills the desires of your heart. May He remember all your sacrifices and also answer your prayers. God bless you. Thank you!
