Edith: Making a Career of Midwifery
How you grow up influences who you become and what you believe. That is something we wholeheartedly believe in. What you experience shapes who you are. It is something true for everyone, but most especially for Edith.
Edith grew up on a piece of land in Kenya with her large family. When her father died, his side of the family swooped in and took not only their land, but any property of theirs that had value. They then had to move to the slums of Kisumu where her mother works as a vegetable vendor. The family couldn’t afford to eat three meals a day and often went to bed hungry.
Since Edith’s sister was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, Edith has cared for her, and from that became interested in pursuing a career in nursing. When Edith got the chance to go to Daystar, she was delighted. However, paying tuition meant that she had to work all year round to get the funds, all the while supporting her family back home. When she had finished her first year, she couldn’t pay her school fees, so she took a year off to earn money to pay for her next year at the university by doing things like construction work, hauling bricks, cleaning other people’s houses, and washing her fellow student’s clothing. She was on the verge of giving up, thinking there was no hope for her, when she applied for a scholarship and was ecstatic when she was chosen to receive one. Edith stated that, with her scholarship, she can see a bright future for herself, and she believes she wouldn’t have been able to finish her studies without it. Now she can focus on working harder and studying without financial worries.
Edith’s childhood and the experiences that accompany it have shaped her into who she is today. She is a giving, grateful, and joyous person who loves the Lord and wants to give back to the community by becoming a nurse, and not just being a nurse, but also being an advocate for women’s rights. What she has gone through has set her on the path that God meant for her to walk.
With someone like you giving, others can be put on the path to that bright future that Edith talked about. You can guide someone towards a brighter path that not only benefits them, but also their community.
