DAYSTAR U.S. UPDATE

MINISTRY OVER THE PAST YEAR

  • Walt Avra ended his time with the organization on December 31, 2021, to join Engage Global.

CELEBRATIONS

  • The new fitness center project was completed in March 2021 through the support of a generous U.S. donor with brand new fitness equipment for students to use.

  • A team from the University of Northwestern communication department traveled to Daystar to deliver and set up equipment for Daystar’s communication studios.

  • The first container of nursing equipment shipped and arrived on campus on April 2, 2022.

  • The second container was shipped at the end of April 2022 and is expected to arrive on campus by August 2022.

  • Construction started for the nursing building at the Athi River campus.

  • A generous donor from MN donated $450K to start a scholarship loan program at Daystar University to help more students in need. The funds can only be used once matched.

  • 207 students were helped through scholarship funding. This includes full scholarship, partial, one-time grants, and the new loan program.

  • DUS was pleased to host President Laban Ayiro during his visit to the U.S. during the month of April and early May. Laban and Alan was able to travel and meet a few of our friends and partners of Daystar.

CHALLENGES

  • Annual fund income was down for the fiscal year 2020-2021.

  • Covid effects are still very present in Kenya, job loss, school closure, and difficulties for many students and their families.

  • The Kenya government owes Daystar University a huge sum for government-sponsored students studying at Daystar.

CURRENT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

  • We hope to reach our goal of funding the remaining $42K for phase one of the nursing building ($880K total for phase one) and start planning for phase two.

  • We hope to double our income towards scholarships to help more students in need.

  • We want to increase our annual fund to help build capacity in the office.

  • We want to reach a full match of $450K towards the Daystar University student loan program. In the U.S. $41,562 has been donated towards the match.

CHANGES IN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN WE ANTICIPATE TO MAKE

  • Our office is looking to restructure staffing roles after the departure of Walt Avra. We are looking to hire someone to help with communication, marketing, and fundraising.

  • We are hoping to re-engage foundations that would support the mission and further the mission of the University.
